Look carefully for sunscreen that will protect you. There are two types of damaging sun rays—UVA, which age the skin, and UVB, which burn it. The SPF number on a bottle of sunscreen is a guide for UVB protection only. It doesn’t tell you if the product will protect you from UVA rays, which can also cause melanoma.
While all sunscreens block some UVB rays, look for one that also contains UVA-blocking ingredients—such as zinc or avobenzone—to fully protect yourself. And be sure to reapply the sunscreen often.
