You may not have to flip off the TV to get fit. Try popping in a fitness video to motivate and teach you to exercise effectively.
There are a lot of benefits to using fitness videos—you can work out in the comfort and privacy of your own home, according to your schedule, and the price is very reasonable. They can be easily packed for travel and used as a backup workout routine in bad weather.
Whether you want to try yoga, Pilates or a cardio workout, you’re sure to be able to find a video that will instruct and encourage you. They’re available in local bookstores, video shops, online and even at your corner drugstore.
But how do you know which one is right for you? The American Council on Exercise and Maryland Department of Health & Mental Hygiene recommend these tips to choose a fitness video that you’ll use and enjoy.
Think about your goals. If you want to improve endurance and strength, look for a total-body workout. If you’re hoping to increase flexibility and balance, head over to the yoga or tai chi section.
Check the fitness level the video is geared toward. Are you a beginner or do you have limited mobility? Then you don’t want the videos that target competitive athletes.
Gather opinions. Ask your friends, especially those who visit health clubs and recreations centers, what videos they’ve enjoyed. Read the reviews on video websites or in fitness magazines.
Stick with a respected instructor who communicates well. Good instructors should be professionally certified, give easy-to-understand directions, address safety concerns, demonstrate the moves and include warm up and cool down periods.
Consider your space and the props that are needed. Make sure you have enough space by your TV to perform the workout. Check the costs of any special props or equipment that are required.
Visit your local video rental store and, if possible, rent the tape to preview it before you buy a copy. Make sure that the workout is fun, the music suits you and that you like the instructor’s style.
Keep in mind that fitness videos aren’t the best choice for everyone. Some people get more motivated in health clubs and group classes.
